This marked the first year of the Coverings Installation & Design Awards -- a competition that goes a step beyond awards that focus strictly on the designer. These awards, which are a progression of the TileLetter & NTCA Installation Awards, were created as a way to acknowledge superior design and installation of tile or stone. The idea is to place focus on skilled installers and the immeasurable impact their work has in the interpretation of a design vision.
The Coverings Installation & Design Awards were announced during Coverings 2012. In total, $10,000 in prize money went home with the winners. Check in on the Coverings website for more photography of this year’s winning projects and also for updates and information on next year’s competition. The contest is open to the design trade and is a great platform for showcasing your best work in ceramic tile, natural stone and glass/mosaic tile.
And the winners are...
Grand prize winners each received a $1,000 cash prize.
Commercial Category: Dan Upton Construction and Jeff Shelton Architect, Santa Barbara, Calif.
Winning Project: El Andaluz, a three-story, seven-unit condominium complex. Judges were impressed with its “tile artistry and...Moroccan influences.” An open courtyard was designed at the center of the site and uses tile in “a melange of decoration.” The installation includes pillars and archways, stair risers and treads, benches and a fountain decorated with tiles in contrasting colors and patterns.
Residential Category: RJH Tile and Stone, Holly, Mich.; and David Ellison, St. Claire Shores, Mich.
Winning Project: RJH and Ellison were called to the rescue of the 7,500 sq. ft. Rosenthal residence, a new construction the sad victim of poor planning and workmanship. A total redesign was planned and the finished product includes a hefty showing of tile and stone, including in the master bedroom and great room. The project also includes custom tiles handmade by Ellison.
